Tooth Restoration Options And Considerations

Tooth restoration means the various methods the dentist might use to replace or repair missing sections of a tooth structure. The tooth structure could need to be restored as a result of decay, fracture, or depreciation of a previously restored tooth. Restoration dentistry is a term used to refer to the cohesive management of oral health issues and restoration of the mouth to its aesthetic and functional form.

There are two steps to restoring the teeth to their functional ways: preparing the tooth for placing the restorative substance and placing the substance. The preparation process often entails cutting the tooth using a special dental hand piece and burrs. The objective here is to create space for placing the restorative material and remove the structurally destroyed tooth portion or dental decay. In cases where permanent restoration is not possible after preparation of the tooth, then temporary restoration is preferred.

Tooth restoration might involve:

Crowns: A crown is a tooth-like cap positioned in such a manner as to restore the appearance, strength, size, and shape of the tooth. A crown is also used to cover dental implants or hold a bridge in position.

Fillings: These are perhaps the most popular dental restoration method. A tooth could be filled using amalgam, silver, gold, or plastic material colored like teeth. The plastic material is known as composite resin.

Implants: These are used to replace tooth roots. They usually are small posts made from metal and positioned inside a bone socket where a tooth is missing. This implant has a covering meant to replace the tooth. The cover is known as a crown.

Bridge: This is an artificial tooth designed to link the space left by the missing teeth. The bridge could be fastened on both ends by crowns and reinforced permanently into their position.

Dentures: These are removable teeth replacements and surrogates for tissue surrounding the missing teeth. Dentures are made from acrylic resin. The resin could contain some metal attachments as well. Wholesome dentures could replace all teeth. Partial denture is often used when there are some remaining natural teeth. Such teeth are retained through attaching metal clasps onto natural teeth.

Tooth replacement

The objective of tooth restoration is the preservation of natural teeth in the best way possible. Replacement of missing teeth using dentures, bridges, implants, fillings, or crowns is meant to assist in the promotion of dental health. The filling of teeth can assist in prevention of cavities from the other teeth. This is because poorly shaped tooth gaps are susceptible to bacteria which cause plaque. A missing tooth is likely to exert more pressure on remaining ones since the chewing surface area is reduced drastically.

Restoration considerations

Among other things, a patient must consider fiscal and physical factors, i.e. budget and health. A good number of dentists will prefer preservation of natural teeth where practicable before considering dentures. The partial or full dentures are considered better if many teeth are missing and where dental implants are inconvenient for health reasons. It is best to consult and consider the best alternatives. Remember also that many dental insurers do not cover dental implants.
